How to Improve Google Drive

Google drive is a cloud based File storage service, where user can easily store, share and organise their files.
Scope:
For current scope we are considering Mobile App.

Flow of the Answer :

We will start by determining the Goals and describing it. Than we will list down some user groups and talk about their personas. We will prioritise and select one user group for which we are primarily developing the product. We will talk about some of the use cases and pain points of this user group followed by prioritising the pain points. We will list down some of the solutions for the pain points mentioned and prioritise the feature, and describing about it in more details. In the end we will describe the metrics that we might be interested in and key success metric for the product. We will wrap everything in a summary and will also try to align it with the overall product vision.

Goals:

For Google drive, our product Improvement Goal will be to focus on User activation. We will be looking into matrics like activated users, new users. We will also be focusing on usage.

User Groups:

  • Teenagers: These are the users who are in their school or college life. They might be using google drive to share documents like assignments, question banks etc.
  • Working Adults: These users are in their work phase. They might be using drive for managing  and storing their personal documents like, pay slips, rent agreement or identity documents etc.
  • Elderly : These users are above 45 years of age and usage and adoption of drive is very less in this segment.
  • Corporate/ Businesses: These are kind of power users of the drive. The users are organisations that use drive as part of G-Suite, for commercial purpose. They use features like real time multiple editing of documents, folder sharing, document sharing, document versioning etc.

The User group that we will be focusing on will be Working Adults as usage in this segment is comparatively less with respect to need of managing and storing the documents.

Use Cases/ Pain Points:

For working adults below could be the possible pain points:

  • User find it difficult in organising the documents on the drive.
  • User might find it difficult to upload documents on the Go.
  • User might find it difficult to search for the relevant documents.
  • User find it easy to mail themselves documents instead of storing to the drive.
  • User might not know what to put on drive.
  • User find it difficult to share the file/folder from the drive and prefer alternate options like email etc.

Prioritization: The most important pain point that we will be looking in, would be “User might find it difficult to upload documents on the Go”. Since we have already defined the scope as mobile. We will be looking into mobile app solutions only.

Solutions:

  • scan and Upload Documents:

Drive should allow users to capture the image of the document, convert it to PDF and upload it to drive.

For the trial run, we can collaborate with applications like camscanner etc, where we can roll our “Save directly to drive” feature. We can use this integration to understand feature usability by the user, before developing our in-house capability.

  • AI based Document Naming and Search Suggestions:

On creating a new document, or uploading an image/document to the drive, drive should be able to provide document name suggestions by considering factors like Content in the document, type of document, size of document, previous naming behaviour followed by users etc.

Whenever, users open drive, drive should be able to provide document suggestions that the user might need to access. For creating AI based suggestion algorithm we might need to consider data points like time, date, location, email activity, contacts, demographic data, document viewing history of user, drive usage behaviour etc.

  • Pre-Defined Templates/ Folders in Drive:

When user, uses drive for the first time, we can provide them with some pre-defined default folders like “Identity Documents”, “House documents”, “office documents”,”Quick Access folder” etc. We will use data like user interest, occupation, age, gender, email activities to determine what kind of pre defined folders can be provided.

  • Collaterals/ New user Activation Process:

We can create collaterals highlighting the importance of uploading important documents like Driving License, Aadhar card, PAN Card, etc and use them on the GO. We can also create a new user activation process that will allow the new user to scan and upload their Aadhar card, Driving License, and can be stored in the quick access folder in the drive.

  • Targeted Email :

Since everyone who has gmail, has also access to drive with free space availability of 15 GB. We can send targeted emails by analysing data and segmenting users who are more likely to upload files to drive.

Prioritization of Features:

For prioritizing, we will be using RIE framework.

Evaluation Matrics for Solutions:

For the above product feature we will be considering metrics like:

  • # of new users.
  • Monthly and Weekly active users.
  • # of user uploaded their first document on the opening drive for the first time.
  • # of folders created per user per period (Monthly, weekly)
  • # of documents uploaded per user per period (Monthly, weekly)
  • # of users renamed default folders.
  • # of documents uploaded per user per default folder.
  • # of users deleted default folders.

Summary:

Well, we discussed about google drive, the product goal. Then we figured out some user groups of google drive. We prioritised it and figure out some pain points. We prioritised the pain points and created some set of solutions for it. In the end we prioritised solutions with RIE framework, and finally evaluated some key metrics.
